Do people take for granted that because you work at home you can drop what you are doing at a moment’s notice and chat on the phone or run to town to pick someone up unannounced? Now if you do not have a schedule, you need to make one in order for you to be in control of your time and be productive. Let people know the hours that you work and the hours you are open to chat or see friends. A schedule also helps confine your work time to a work time so that work does not take over your family life.
Remember you are working. Feel free to turn your phone off and let the answering machine pick up your calls. If you treat your business or at-home job as a serious venture, most other people will eventually come around to that idea also.
As for husbands or wives who expect housework to be finished when they come home from work, it is important to make it clear that you are working when you are home, not playing video games or eating Bon Bons all day long. Show them the tasks that you do and how long they take to complete. They may have no idea at all about how you spend your day.

This is not the typical day of someone who works at home. Filling family and friends in on what it is that you do will decrease misunderstandings and you can work together to make household chores a family priority instead of letting it fall on the shoulders of one person.
The fact is that the majority of people do not work out of their homes and may not even know anyone who did – prior to meeting you. The great thing is that if you set your boundaries, respect your own business and communicate those clearly, loved ones will follow suit.
